Die Hauptthese der Arbeit besagt, daß der reife Hegel die beiden grundlegenden Probleme der Philosophie der Neuzeit - einerseits eine gesicherte wissenschaftliche Methode und andererseits die Konzeption der Subjektivität - in einen inneren Zusammenhang bringt: In Hegels reifer Logikkonzeption ist die dialektische Methode, wie sie die "absolute Idee" aus der Wissenschaft der Logik darstellt, die reine Struktur und die syllogistische Darstellung der absoluten Subjektivität. Diese These wird in der Arbeit entwicklungsgeschichtlich, hermeneutisch und kritisch untersucht und untermauert.

Die Entwicklung von Hegels Logik und der darin implizierten dialektischen Methode wird in fünf Phasen unterteilt: 1. die frühe Jenaer Zeit (1801-1803/04), hier bildet die Logik eine Einleitung in die Metaphysik; die Dialektik ist eine rein negative Methode zur Zerstörung endlicher Bestimmungen, 2. die mittlere Jenaer Zeit (1804/05), die Logik wird zunehmend Grundlegungswissenschaft der Metaphysik; die Dialektik ist die Methode des die Kategorien der Logik untersuchenden und ihre Widersprüche aufdeckenden metareflektierenden Philosophen, 3. die späte Jenaer Zeit (1805/06-1807), Hegel konzpiert erstmalig eine metaphysisch-spekulative Logik, die Dialektik bildet eine spekulative, logische Bestimmungen positiv hervorbringende Methode; die Lehre vom spekulativen Satz aus der Phänomenologie wird untersucht, 4. die frühe Nürnberger Zeit mit den Schullogiken Hegels (1808-1811/12) und 5. die reife Logikkonzeption Hegels (1812-1831), hier wird einerseits eine Detailanalyse der "absoluten Idee" vorgenommen und andererseits die verschiedenen Dialektiktypen in der Logik untersucht, also die "Übergangsdialektik" in der Seinslehre, die "Reflexionsdialektik" in der Wesenslehre und die "Entwicklungsdialektik" in der Begriffslehre.
